#10 Jags cruise past Jarvis Christian in series opener
HAWKINS – The No. 10-ranked UHV baseball team continued its hot start on Thursday.
The Jaguars beat Jarvis Christian, 15-0 in eight innings via the run rule, in the first game of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series at Bulldog Field, extending their winning streak to 12 games marking the second-longest streak in program history. It's the sixth shutout for UHV this season.
A run-scoring error in the second inning plated Juan Perez before Jose Montanez picked up the first RBI of the game with a single to score Xavier Ortega, who was running for Hal Perez.
A two-run single by Cristian Garcia with the bases loaded sparked a four-run fourth inning for the Jaguars (21-2, 10-0). Jean Michael Gonzalez later scored on a balk and Terry Burrel III drove in Garcia with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
Montanez then drove in his second and third runs of the game for UHV with a single to right field to kick off a seven-run eighth. Jackson Purcell, Juan Perez, Alejandro Belo, Roberto Olguin and Xavier Ortega also had RBIs in the inning for UHV.
Eight Jaguars had multi-hit performances on Thursday, including Montanez, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Garcia was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored to extend his on-base streak to 23 games.
Jackson Purcell was 2-for-3 with an RBI, extending his hitting streak to seven games.
Brady Parker improved to 6-0 on the mound with 10 strikeouts over seven shutout innings in which he allowed just two hits. It's the third time this season and second consecutive start in which the Victoria native notched 10+ strikeouts.
Dawson Orsak came on to toss a scoreless eighth inning and seal the win.
The Jaguars and Bulldogs (0-8, 0-7) will conclude the series on Friday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
