Another dominant performance helped the Texas A&M University-Victoria women's soccer team climb in the standings on Saturday.
The Jaguars (7-2-3, 4-1-1) beat University of the Southwest, 4-1, at The Cage to move into fourth place in the Red River Athletic Conference standings on 13 points and extend their unbeaten run to five matches. They are just five points behind first-place LSU Shreveport with five matches left.
The conference tournament format sees six teams qualify for the tournament with the top two teams getting a bye to the semifinals and the third- and fourth-place teams hosting quarterfinal matches.
Ayloni Garcia continued her torrid pace, netting the opening goals of the game in the 21st and 28th minutes to give A&M-Victoria a 2-0 lead it would take into halftime. Siobhan Scott and Jessica Salkeld provided the respective assists.
With those two goals, Garcia is now at 13 on the year – just two away from breaking the single-season record. The McAllen native has scored eight of those 13 in the last five matches.
Briana Ortega finished off a pass from Yesenia Vega in the 59th minute for her first goal of the year. Vanessa Bevalian's sixth goal of the season, this one on a pass from Belle Artley, capped the scoring for the Jaguars in the 85th minute.
The Jaguars' defense once again stood out, limiting Southwest to four total shots while A&M-Victoria peppered 19 against the Mustangs' back line.
Abree Fry earned her fourth win in goal this season to move to 4-0.
The Jaguars are home once again next week to face Xavier (La.) and LSU Alexandria on Thursday and Saturday. Xavier enters the week in second while LSUA is third in the conference standings.
