Stenderup-Jorgensen highlights Jags’ 3 All-Conference selections
Trine Stenderup-Jorgensen made an immediate impact on the UHV women's soccer program in her freshman season.
Because of that, the freshman defender was one of three Jaguars recognized on the 2023 All-Red River Athletic Conference team and the only one to garner first team honors. Estelle Flanagan and Lexi Day were also recognized from UHV.
Stenderup-Jorgensen, who was also recognized on the RRAC All-Freshman team, anchored the Jaguars (6-7-5) back line as a confident center back in her first year with the program, helping limit opponents to an average of 7.7 shots per game.
But the freshman from Aabenra, Denmark, also took her chances in attack for UHV, scoring three goals and providing a team-leading five assists from her defensive position. In an 8-1 win over Huston-Tillotson, Stenderup-Jorgensen scored a career-high two goals with an assist as well. In her debut against Texas Wesleyan on Aug. 31, she posted a season-best two assists in a 2-2 draw.
"Great to see other coaches in the conference recognize Trine as a top defender in the RRAC," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "She was a dominant presence in the back for us this year. She holds herself to a high standard and is constantly looking for feedback on how to improve. We're looking forward to seeing her develop into a potential RRAC Defensive Player of the Year candidate in the future."
Flanagan, a senior forward from McKinney, was an honorable mention honoree after scoring a team-leading seven goals with three assists for a team-high 17 points this season. It's the third time Flanagan has been recognized on the All-RRAC team and second as an honorable mention.
In a 5-0 win over Paul Quinn College on Oct. 7, Flanagan posted new career-highs for goals and points after scoring a hat trick and providing an assist for seven total points.
With 130 career shots, Flanagan ranks second all-time for shots at UHV, trailing Emily Lupton who posted 191 shots from 2014-17.
"Estelle had a solid year for us up front," Rigby said. "She sets the tone for our attack and provided our team with good leadership throughout the year."
Day, a senior defender from Alvin, was recognized as UHV's representative on the Champions of Character team.
The NAIA Champions of Character, an innovative outreach program designed to instill character values in student-athletes and coaches, contains five core values embraced by each RRAC member institution: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
"Lexi is very deserving of this award as she's an excellent teammate and leader," Rigby said. "She's battled through some injuries but is always positive with teammates and staff. She's the first to volunteer with community service and enjoys giving back to the community."
