There's more than pride on the line for the Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team this week.
The Jaguars (10-2, 3-0) host Texas A&M University-San Antonio in a three-game series as part of the rivalry series, The Battle of the Big Cats, Friday and Saturday at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex. Both teams enter the series a perfect 3-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play after the first week.
Friday's 4 p.m. doubleheader is Free Ticket Friday presented by Karly Hoerig, MBA, CFP®, with Thrivent Financial. Fan's attending Saturday's 12 p.m. series finale can buy an A&M-Victoria t-shirt at the field for admission rather than a traditional ticket, with proceeds going to the A&M-Victoria softball team.
A&M-Victoria is coming off a series sweep of Texas College to open conference play over the weekend, where the Jaguars outscored the Steers 39-8.
Offense leading the way
A&M-Victoria ranks ninth in the NAIA and second in the RRAC in runs scored with 95 through its first 11 games.
The Jaguars are tied for 20th nationally in batting average, boasting a league-leading .371 clip after collecting 39 hits over the weekend.
Angelina Morales continues to set a blistering pace for A&M-Victoria, hitting .500 this year with 12 RBIs. She ranks second in the RRAC among qualifying hitters in batting average and fourth in RBIs. The Pasadena native has hit safely in 10 of the 12 games this year with five multi-hit performances.
On the base path, A&M-Victoria ranks 12th in stolen bases with 34 thanks to freshman Khamryn Werdlow's league-leading 15 stolen bases.
Freshman Cristela Trevino has homered in each of the last two games for the Jaguars, helping the Alice native go 4-for-8 with five RBIs in last week's series.
Shutting 'em down in the circle
A strong week in the circle helped A&M-Victoria's pitching staff climb up to 25th nationally and first in the RRAC with a 2.26 ERA.
The Jaguars only let up three earned runs in three games last week as Zoe Hardy, Jocelyne Galvan and Haley Noska earned the wins.
Galvan earned the win in Game 2 after striking out a career-high eight batters. Hardy, who leads the RRAC in ERA (1.12), improved to 4-0 in the circle after a Game 3 victory. Hardy also ranks fourth in strikeouts with 20 this season for the Jaguars.
Scouting A&M-San Antonio
A&M-Victoria owns a 20-4 edge all-time against A&M-San Antonio (7-3, 3-0) in the Battle of the Big Cats.
The two teams met in an elimination game at the RRAC Tournament last season, with A&M-San Antonio prevailing, 2-0. A&M-Victoria had won the previous 10 meetings, including a sweep of the four-game regular season series in 2025.
