The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball begins its push for a seventh Red River Athletic Conference championship this week.
The Jaguars travel to Tyler to square off with Texas College in a four-game series Friday and Saturday. The first three games are the RRAC openers for A&M-Victoria (6-2).
A&M-Victoria is coming off a four-game split at the LSU Alexandria tournament Feb. 7-8.
The Jaguars off to a blistering start offensively, plating 56 runs and hitting .357. They rank 23rd nationally in runs scored and 29th in batting average.
League's best pitching
A&M-Victoria players occupy the first and fifth spots on the conference leaderboard in terms of ERA.
Sophomore Zoe Hardy leads the league with a 1.17 ERA while freshman Madelyn Butler boasts a 2.33 to sit in fifth. Hardy also ranks fifth in strikeouts with 16.
The Walla Walla, Washington, native was also named the RRAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 9. The right-hander posted a 2-0 record in the circle, striking out 14 batters and allowing just three runs over 15 innings of work to help the Jaguars go 4-2 in six games.
The Jaguars lead the conference in team ERA at 2.68.
Offensive prowess
A&M-Victoria's offense has had success hitting throughout the lineup with eight of its regular starters hitting over .300. That's helped the Jaguars rank second in the RRAC with a .357 team batting average.
Angelina Morales ranks sixth in the RRAC with a .476 average and a team-leading eight RBIs. The Pasadena native has hit safely in seven of the eight games this season, including each of the last three games.
Cristela Trevino, a freshman, is also north of the .400 mark at .421 and six RBIs. The Alice native has posted three multi-hit games so far to start her collegiate career.
Freshman Khamryn Werdlow is tied for the league-lead in stolen bases with 11 through eight games and an on-base percentage of .423, giving A&M-Victoria a perfect leadoff hitter.
Scouting the Steers
This weekend will be the first games of the year for Texas College (1-27, 1-27 in 2025). The Jaguars are 43-0 all-time against the Steers after sweeping last year's doubleheader at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex by scores of 12-3 and 9-1.
