UHV’s Lopez named RRAC Player of the Week
WACO, Texas – UHV's Kaylle Lopez has opened the 2024 season on a red-hot tear.
The senior infielder is getting recognition for that start after being named the Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 12-18.
"Being named Player of the Week is incredibly meaningful to me," Lopez said. "I was out last season and had to work harder than ever to come back even better. So, starting off this season on such a high note feels amazing. This recognition isn't just for me, either. It's for my team, too. We push each other to be our best and I couldn't get all the RBIs without my teammates getting on base. I'm just one piece in the puzzle."
Lopez hit .467 with 10 RBIs, a double and a triple in four games for the Jaguars (5-1) last week as the team went 3-1 against NCAA Division III opponents Schreiner University and St. Thomas (TX).
In each game, the Sinton native recorded multiple RBIs, including tying her career-high with 4 in a 17-8 win over Schreiner on Wednesday.
She opened the season with a five-game hitting streak.
Lopez's RBIs ranks second in the conference while her batting average ranks third.
"Kaylle has been fantastic for us this year," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "She has plenty of experience and understands what our team needs to be successful. The way she's started the year has set the tone for our team, and I'm fired up to see her being a strong veteran leader for us."
UHV hosts University of the Southwest in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday to open up conference play.
