A late comeback bid fell just short for the Texas A&M University-Victoria men's soccer team on Friday.
The Jaguars fell to Nelson University, 3-1, at The Cage Friday afternoon despite a late goal.
A&M-Victoria (0-2) fell behind 2-0 after goals from Nelson's Sergio Lopez Garcia, in the 19th minute, and Makel Mitchell, in the 46th minute.
It looked as though the Jaguars were going to battle back with Josh Loveridge heading home a corner kick from Murray Brieley in the 81st minute for his second career goal. An 83rd-minute shot by Peter Galvan clanged off the crossbar, inches away from leveling the match.
The Lions (2-1-1) put the dagger in the match with an 89th minute goal by Angel Cruz.
The Jaguars managed eight shots with three on goal, two of which came from Felipe Rangel. Brieley, Rhuaraidh Menzies and Yahir Pena also had shots.
Tyler Kaeppeli and Eric Thust each played a half in goal. Thust made four saves against six shots on goal in the second half.
The Jaguars hit the road for their first away game of the year at NCAA Division III foe McMurry University in Abilene at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
