Jaguars' season ends in Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Houston-Victoria's history-making season came to an end Saturday night.
The eighth-ranked Mobile Rams tallied three second-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Jaguars in the 2017 NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament Opening Round at the Jungle on the campus of the University of Mobile.
The Rams, making their 18th appearance advance to the NAIA National Tournament on Nov. 27-Dec. 4 in Delray Beach, Fla. The Jaguars, who were making their first appearance in the NAIA national tournament, finish the year at 11-3-2.
Nathan Gillespie scored the Rams' first two goals as he struck in the 26th minute to give Mobile a 1-0 halftime lead. He then found the net again in the 53rd minute for a 2-0 advantage.
The Jaguars, who had missed on some early set plays, finally broke through the Rams defense when Sydney Tume (FR/Houston, TX) drove home the Jaguars' lone goal off a cross from Louie Fox (FR/Croydon, England) in the 80th minute.
But the Rams answered right back in the 81st minute of a goal from Henry Newton, who has assisted on the Rams' first two goals.
Matthew McArthur finished off the scoring in the 84th minute.
Mobile outshot the Jaguars 16-8, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Adrian Mendoza (JR/Houston, TX) paced the Jaguars with two shots, while Tume, Brian Foulger (SR/Leighton Buzzard, England), Samuel Ashun (SO/McKinney), Connagh Wilks (FR/Egham, England), Espen Hansen (JR/Kristiansand, Norway) and Patrick Coto (FR/Houston-TX) each had one shot.
UHV goalkeeper Palemon Plancarte (JR/Houston, TX) finished with six saves.
