No. 10 A&M-Victoria baseball routs St. Thomas behind Mireles career outing
Senior right-hander Justin Mireles turned in the finest outing of his collegiate career as the No. 10-ranked Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team rolled to a 12–0 victory over St. Thomas (TX) on Tuesday evening at Riverside Stadium.
Mireles was in complete command from the first pitch to the last, tossing his first career complete game while allowing just three hits in seven scoreless innings. The senior from Corpus Christi took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
The senior walked two and helped himself defensively with nine groundouts, recording a career milestone by surpassing 100 strikeouts during his start. The shutout marked A&M–Victoria's second this season as the Jaguars improved to 29–11 overall. It was also the 13th time this season the Jaguars eclipsed double-digit runs.
Offensively, the Jaguars struck early and never let up, scoring in five of their six offensive innings and capitalizing on four St. Thomas errors. Garrett Smith provided the early spark, while the lineup showcased depth and balance in a dominant team effort.
Key Moments
A&M-Victoria immediately seized control in the bottom of the first inning. After Antonio Benitez reached and advanced into scoring position, Beck Zimmerman lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Jaguars the lead. Two batters later, Smith crushed a solo home run to left field, extending the advantage to 2–0 and energizing the home crowd.
The lead doubled in the second inning when Benitez delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field. One inning later, Roberto Olguin added an RBI single to make it 5–0 as the Jaguars continued to put pressure on the Celts' defense.
The Jaguars added two more unearned runs in the fourth inning, including one that came across on a wild pitch, stretching the margin to seven. Any remaining doubt was erased in the sixth, when A&M–Victoria erupted for five runs on four hits and two defensive miscues.
Smith delivered again in that frame with a two-run single to center, while additional runs scored on a fielder's choice and a throwing error. Mireles finished the night by working around traffic in the seventh, stranding three runners to preserve the shutout.
