The Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team is focused on the most important thing this season: its next game.
The Jaguars (27-9, 16-2) hold a two-game lead over the field in the Red River Athletic Conference title race, which currently features a four-way tie for second place between LSU Shreveport, Our Lady of the Lake, Louisiana Christian and LSU Alexandria – all with a 14-4 record in the conference.
A&M-Victoria heads to the latter this Thursday and Friday for a three-game series at Generals Baseball Field in Alexandria, Louisiana.
After sweeping No. 1-ranked LSU Shreveport last week, the Jaguars are riding a 14-game winning streak, the longest under head coach Jonathan Stavinoha.
Weekly Awards Sweep
On Monday, the RRAC announced A&M-Victoria's Garrett Smith and Jacob Baker swept the conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards.
Smith came in clutch to help the Jaguars pick up their first series sweep against LSUS since 2026.
The Katy native had four RBIs against the Pilots and each of them proved important. In an 8-6 win in Game 1 on Friday, Smith delivered an RBI double in the seventh inning that proved to be the decisive run. In Game 2, Smith had a go-ahead, two-run single in the third to put A&M-Victoria up 3-2 before he delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to seal a series win. Smith has driven in 44 runs this season, a mark which ranks second in the RRAC.
It was the second consecutive week for Smith to win Player of the Week.
Baker delivered an exclamation mark in the landmark series sweep.
The Cuero native tossed 6.1 scoreless innings in Game 3 against one of the nation's best offenses. He had five strikeouts as the Jaguars went on to win 5-2 in the series finale.
Starting Pitching delivering
Last week, A&M-Victoria's starting pitching of Jonathan Jones, Blane Zeplin and Baker combined to let up just six earned runs with 21 strikeouts against five walks in 18.1 innings against the Pilots.
They have been dominant during this winning streak, boasting a 2.07 staff ERA and 87 strikeouts in 78.1 innings over the last 14 games. Zeplin struck out 10 batters in Game 2 against LSUS, marking the sixth time this season the Victoria native has eclipsed double-digit strikeouts.
This season, the staff has combined for 185 strikeouts with Zeplin ranking second in the NAIA with 77 strikeouts and Jones tied for the NAIA lead in wins with 8. A&M-Victoria's pitching ranks 19th nationally with 278 strikeouts this season.
Cutting down runners
A&M-Victoria's battery duo of Roberto Olguin and Beck Zimmerman have been nearly impossible to run on this season.
They've combined for 22 runners caught stealing which ranks second in the NAIA. They gunned down four runners on seven attempts last week against LSU Shreveport.
Olguin's 12 runners caught stealing is tied for 22nd in the country.
