The Texas A&M University-Victoria is aiming to build momentum this weekend in a crucial Red River Athletic Conference series.
The No. 20-ranked Jaguars (11-7, 2-1) welcome Louisiana Christian to Riverside Stadium for a three-game set, starting with a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
A&M-Victoria is coming off a strong series win at Our Lady of the Lake after a six-run ninth inning propelled the Jaguars past the Saints in the series finale on Saturday.
Letting Baker bake
Junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Baker turned in a one-run gem on Saturday.
The Cuero native matched his career-longest outing, going eight innings and surrendering one run on five hits and a walk while striking out a pair.
After that performance, Baker earned RRAC Pitcher of the Week honors to become the second Jaguar to earn the award this season with Blane Zeplin winning it earlier. Baker leads the Jaguars' starting rotation with a 1.91 ERA, which ranks second in the RRAC. He's limited opponents to a 0.92 WHIP over his 28.1 innings this season, a mark which puts him 13th on the RRAC leaderboard.
His dominant junior campaign has led to A&M-Victoria to a 4.21 ERA and 125 strikeouts which rank fourth in the RRAC. Jonathan Jones ranks third nationally in wins with four while his 33 strikeouts is tied for seventh.
Heating up
Connor Kaiser has been red-hot recently, hitting safely in five of the last six games after a three-hit day on Saturday.
The College Station native is hitting .381 this season and shares the team lead in RBIs (15) with Antonio Benitez. A&M-Victoria boasts seven players north of .300 offensively as the team is hitting .307 through 18 games this season.
Benitez ranks second in the RRAC in stolen bases with 13 and third in batting average at .446.
Robby Olguin is another one of the scorching hot bats for the Jaguars, hitting .373 with 12 RBIs this season despite seeing his six-game hitting streak come to an end on Saturday.
Scouting the Wildcats
Louisiana Christian (18-2, 3-0) is off to a great start to the season and is riding an 11-game winning streak entering this weekend's series. The Wildcats swept Jarvis Christian.
The Wildcats rank second in the conference in batting average (.342) and ERA (2.74), and first in home runs (21) and strikeouts (180).
This will be the Wildcats' first true road series of the season.
Louisiana Christian owns an 11-5 edge in the all-time series after winning all four meetings last season.
