Olguin stays hot, No. 20 A&M-Victoria baseball downs OLLU in RRAC opener
SAN ANTONIO – Roberto Olguin's red-hot bat made the road trip for the Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team.
The senior from Robstown delivered a team-leading four RBIs to set the No. 20-ranked Jaguars on course for a 9-5 win in their Red River Athletic Conference opener against Our Lady of the Lake at Missions Baseball Academy on Friday.
A&M-Victoria (10-6, 1-0) used 14 hits to plate the nine runs in the Alamo City on Friday night.
Every starter for the Jaguars picked up a hit in the win.
Usual suspects
Olguin drove in his season-high four RBIs on a pair of hits, making him one of four Jaguars to deliver multi-hit performances. The catcher has now hit safely in each of the last five games, boasting a .550 average and seven RBIs over that stretch.
He was joined by Antonio Benitez, Beck Zimmerman and Garrett Smith as the Jaguars with two or more hits.
For Benitez, who leads the team with a .464 batting average, he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases during his 10th multi-hit game this season. Zimmerman has now reached base in each of the first 16 games this season after a 2-for-4 showing.
Jose Montanez was the only other Jaguar with multiple RBIs thanks to a two-run double to highlight a four-run third inning as A&M-Victoria built a 5-0 lead before OLLU (8-6, 0-1) could respond.
You'll never catch Mr. Jones
Jonathan Jones earned his fourth consecutive win on the mound Friday.
The Manvel native struck out six batters across six innings as he held the Saints to just one free pass.
Matthew Mejia and Andrew Rivera worked to allow just three hits and two walks over the final three innings Friday to seal the win.
Next up
The Jaguars and Saints close out the weekend series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. Live stats can be found on the A&M-Victoria athletics website while the live streams will be provided by OLLU.
