UHV’s Jones named RRAC Pitcher of the Week
WACO – Another week, another weekly award for the UHV baseball team.
On Tuesday, the Red River Athletic Conference named the Jaguars' Jonathan Jones its Pitcher of the Week for the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
UHV (6-1) pitchers have won both Pitcher of the Week awards through the first two weeks of the season with Brady Parker taking home the season's first honors following a no-hitter vs. Wiley University on Opening Day.
"You can't say enough about Jones," said head coach Jonathan Stavinoha. "He rose to the challenge on Sunday and delivered for us in a big way. He loves to be in those situations and it was awesome to see how he performed in that spot. There's nobody more deserving of this recognition."
Jones picked up the award for his dominant performance against No. 14-ranked Central Methodist, which helped spur the Jaguars to three ranked wins on the weekend.
The right-handed senior pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven batters over the seven innings and allowing just five hits and a walk.
The Manvel native has made a strong start to his UHV career, boasting a 2-0 record and 0.75 ERA over 12 innings of work in his first two appearances with the Jaguars.
His work has helped UHV's pitching staff flaunt the second-best ERA in the RRAC with a 3.35 ERA. The Jaguars' starters hold a combined 1.95 ERA.
"This is a blessing, honestly," Jones said. "This just shows when you stay patient and put in the work, you get the outcomes you want. I feel like my performance this past weekend was due to the trust and support I have with the guys behind me. My goal was to go out there and give the guys every chance possible to come out with a win."
The Jaguars hit the road for the first time this weekend with a Saturday doubleheader against Midland University (Neb.) and a Sunday doubleheader vs. Texas Wesleyan. Both series will be played at noon at Sycamore Park in Fort Worth.
