Baseball announces 2024 schedule
The UHV baseball team is set to defend its Red River Athletic Conference Tournament title after announcing its 2024 schedule on Friday.
The Jaguars, who finished 28-27 and reached the NAIA Opening Round Semifinals in 2023, will play 47 games, starting with a doubleheader against Wayland Baptist for their home opener on Jan. 26.
"We're ready to get the season going," said second-year head coach Jonathan Stavinoha. "Our program took a big step forward last year and we return a large core of that team. With how they and our new players performed this fall, we're confident of our potential and hope to show that on the field this season."
UHV opens the season with 11 consecutive home games over the first four weeks starting with non-conference series with Wayland (Jan. 26-27) and Mid-America Christian (Feb. 2-3) before opening RRAC play at home against Texas A&M-Texarkana on Feb. 16-17.
The Jaguars will host a total of 28 home games.
UHV will face off with LSU-Shreveport March 22-23 for homecoming weekend with the 12 p.m. doubleheader on March 23 serving as the homecoming game.
The Jaguars will wrap up their regular season at home against LSU Alexandria April 26-27.
UHV will have two neutral site games against No. 21-ranked Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Assemblies of God on Feb. 27 and April 9, respectively.
The Feb. 27 clash with the Rams – a rematch of last year's NAIA Opening Round elimination game which UHV won 9-3 – will take place at Constellation Field, the home of the Houston Astros Triple-A affiliate Sugar Land Space Cowboys.
The Jaguars' longest road trip this season will be a trip to Hobbs, New Mexico, to face University of the Southwest in a three-game RRAC set.
UHV will travel to NCAA Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 13 for a 6 p.m. game.
UHV's returners are highlighted by first team All-RRAC catcher and 2023 RRAC Tournament MVP Hal Perez, second-teamers Hayden Leopold and Kaden Fikac, and gold glove center-fielder Raul Lopez, as well as RRAC All-Tournament relief pitcher Justin Mireles and starter Mason Longoria, who set the UHV single season starts record with 16 last year.
In addition to the Jaguars' returners, UHV's junior college recruiting class was ranked 19th in the country by the JUCO Baseball Blog and NAIA Ball.
