Three different University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars scored Thursday to lead the women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Paul Quinn Lady Tigers in the Jaguars' home opener at The Cage.

 

The Jaguars improve to 2-4 with the win, while Paul Quinn falls to 2-6.

 

Kaitlyn Finger (FR/Mansfield, TX) broke the ice just inside the 10th minute when she came away with a steal and then beat the Paul Quinn goalkeeper in a one-on-one.

 

Emily Lupton (SR/Preston, England), returning to play after missing a game, picked up the game winner in the 24th minute when she deposited a pass from Yahajaria Lara past the Lady Tigers goalie for a 2-0 advantage.

 

Jurneee Fernandez finished off the scoring with the Jaguars' lone goal in the second half. Fernandez fired in the shot in the 55th minute of a pass from Lupton.

 

Amy Joya broke up the shutout in the 89th minute when she converted on a free kick.

 

Both teams fired off 10 shots in the contest with the Lady Tigers holding a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.

 

Lupton, Fernandez, Lauren Leslie (JR/Banknock, Scotland) and Olivia Salas (FR/Victoria) each put up two shots for the Jaguars, while Lara and Finger each had one. Bianca Galindo (SR/Garland, TX) finished with eight saves.

 

The Jaguars return to Red River Athletic Conference action on Saturday when they host the University of the Southwest in a noon game at The Cage.

 

In other RRAC action on Thursday, LSU-Shreveport blanked Texas College 5-0, Wiley College edged Our Lady of the Lake 2-1, LSU-Alexandria rolled past Jarvis Christian 15-0 and Texas A&M-Texarkana decked Huston-Tillotson 7-1.
