SHREVEPORT, La. – Behind a stifling defensive effort and a goal from Kaitlyn Finger (FR/Mansfield, TX), the University of Houston-Victoria women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Thursday with a 1-0 shutout over the LSU-Shreveport Pilots at The Swamp.

 

The victory lifted the Jaguars to 1-3 on the year and 1-1 in Red River Athletic Conference action, while the Pilots fell to 1-4-2, 0-2 in RRAC.

 

The UHV defense pressured the Pilots the entire contest allowing just nine shots, three on goal, while the UHV offense was putting on the offensive pressure with 19 shots, including nine on goal.

 

LSUS got off three shots in the first half, with two on goal, but could not get near the goal in the second half as goalkeeper Bianca Galindo (SR/Garland, TX) and the defensive back line allowed just six shots, with one on goal. Galindo finished with three saves.

 

Finger gave the Jaguars their first lead of the season in the 54th minute when she got an open shot from the left side and deposited the ball into the back right corner of the net. Finger finished with two shots, both on goal.

 

The Jaguars got a number of other chances but were unable to convert as Lauren Leslie (JR/Banknock, Scotland) led the offensive charge with six shots, four on goal, and Jurnee Fernandez (JR/Fresno, CA) added five shots, with two on goal. Olivia Salas (FR/Victoria) put up another three shots, while Yahajaira Lara (SR/Laredo, TX) added two and Treysi Diaz Deleon (JR/Dallas, TX) one.

 

In other RRAC action on Thursday, Our Lady of the Lake rolled by Jarvis Christian 13-0, LSU-Alexandria edged Houston St. Thomas 2-1, and Huston-Tilloson defeated Texas College 10-0. In non-conference lay, Texas A&M-Texarkana blanked Paul Quinn 4-0.

The Jaguars jump right back into action Saturday when the face LSUA in a 1 p.m. match in Alexandria.
