For most of the day pitchers dominated the game Tuesday, but the St. Edward's Hilltoppers finally broke through in the eighth inning to claim a 5-0 win over the university of Houston-Victoria Jaguars at Riverside Stadium
Starters Bo Sheridan (SR/Sugar Land, TX) (UHV) and Austin Weaver (SEU) each had one-hit shutouts going through the first four innings before the bullpens went to work in the non-conference contest.
The Hilltoppers (23-17) broke through in the fifth with a solo run as TJ Giselbach lined a one-out double of the left-field wall. Giselbach would move to third on a passed ball, before racing home with the game's first run on a fielder's choice ground out by Zach Schindler.
It remained 1-0 until the eighth when the Hilltoppers erupted for four runs behind a pair of doubles from Giselbach and pinch-hitter Derek Thompson. Giselbach slapped a bases-loaded double to left for two runs and after Troy Anderson's sacrifice fly, Thompson belted a double to right-center for a 5-0 lead.
The Jaguars (14-22) were limited to just two hits and never got a runner past second base against four SEU pitchers.
The Jaguars managed to get another runner to second in the ninth when Jonathan Banuelos (JR/Arlington) opened the inning reaching on an error and stole second. Andrew Gross (SR/Alvin, TX) then drew a two-out walk, but both runners were left stranded when Chase Tamez (SO/Cypress, TX) grounded out to second to end the game.
UHV will return to action Friday with a noon doubleheader in Austin against Huston-Tillotson.
