For the past five years, the University of Houston-Victoria softball team has participated in the Play4TheCure cancer fundraiser for the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
This year the Jaguars will again participate in the Play4TheCure event on Friday, April 21 when they host Our Lady of the Lake University in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
This year's games are dedicated to longtime super fan Forrest Voelkner.
"Each year, UHV softball raises funds for cancer research and we also try to honor one of our family members who has face the terrible disease," said UHV softball coach Lindsey Ortiz. "This year, we are playing in honor of our very own Super Fan, Mr. Forrest Voelkner. He has been attending UHV softball games since the program's inaugural season, and is always full of encouragement for our players.
"He's also the best foul ball shagger we've ever had. He has been battling breast cancer and we are proud to raise funds in his name."
The team has raised over $1,500 each of the last two years through the fundraising efforts.
