FARMERS BRANCH – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University used a pair of late three-run innings Thursday to sweep a non-conference doubleheader away from the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars.
The Stars (46-0) tallied three times in the seventh to overcome a 2-1 deficit to win Game 1 with a 4-2 victory. The two teams then battled through 12 innings in the nightcap with the Stars again tallying three runs in the top of the 12th to take Game 2 with a 5-2 win.
The Stars struck first in Game 1 with an unearned run in the top of the third, but the Jaguars (28-16) came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
Gabby Davila (SO/Houston, TX) opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Revels (SO/Corpus Christi, TX). Aubri Hockenbury (SR/Santa Fe, TX) followed with a single to left before Davila raced home on an infield single by Haley Beam (SR/Pearland, Texas).
Hockenbury would give the Jaguars a 2-1 lead in the fifth with her 14th home run of the season. Hockenbury is now one short of tying the UHV single-season home run record of 15 set by Marley Moehrig in 2013.
Jaci Smith tied the game with to start the seventh-inning rally with a one-out solo home run. The Stars would go on two score two more unearned runs to claim the victory.
Again, OCU jumped out to the lead in Game 2 with a solo run in the first, but the Jaguars answered right back.
Davila singled to right, moved to second on a Revels sacrifice bunt and scored on Beams' two-out double to left.
The Jaguars would grab a 2-1 lead in the second when Kathryn Wright would open the inning with a double to right. Pinch-runner Alyssa Dial (SO/Victoria, TX) would then steal third and score on a wild pitch.
The lead would stand until the fifth when the Stars would tie the game at 2-2.
Turning to the international tiebreaker in the 10th inning, neither team could break through in the 10th or 11th before the Stars broke the tie in the 12th. With Amanda Ingram at second, Bailey Whitmore put down a sacrifice bunt and Abby Meador grounded out to second to score Ingram.
Kali Pugh would add on a two-out, two-run home run for insurance to keep the Stars undefeated on the season.
The Jaguars will wrap up the regular season on April 21-22 when the host Our Lady of the Lake in a pair of Red River Athletic Conference doubleheaders at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
