HOBBS, N.M. – The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars committed seven errors and gave up 15 unearned runs Friday in dropping a pair of Red River Athletic Conference games to the University of the Southwest Mustangs at Jake Williams Field.
The Jaguars fell 11-4 in the opener and dropped a slugfest in the nightcap 16-15 as the Mustangs won on a walk-off sacrifice fly.
The Jaguars (6-11, 3-5 RRAC) got on the board first in the opener as Andrew Gross (SR/Alvin, TX) blasted a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for his eighth home run of the season.
The Mustangs (16-12, 6-2 RRAC) answered back with four runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 7-1 lead.
The Jaguars would pull back to within 7-4 with a solo run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Joshua Fonseca (SO/Pasadena, TX) scored Derek Maciejeski (FR/Tomball, TX), who had walked, with a bases-load sacrifice fly in the fourth. Dalton Rodriguez (SR/Bay City, TX) would race home on a fielder's choice from Chase Tamez (SO/Cypress, TX) and Chase Almendarez (JR/Round Rock, TX) would double home a run in the fifth.
The Mustangs would tack on four more in the sixth to finish off the victory.
Only five of the 11 Southwest runs were earned as Ross bludau worked 5.1 innings allowing nine hits and a walk, while striking out six in being tagged with the loss.
The two teams combined to bang out 33 hits and score 31 runs in the nightcap with Felipe Lopez plating the game winner on a one-out, bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
The Jaguars sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning jumping out to a 5-0 lead. But the Mustangs answered with six in the bottom of the inning and the slugfest was on.
UHV regained the lead in the top of the third taking advantage of a couple of Southwest errors to score three for an 8-6 lead.
The Mustangs would answer right back with five runs, before the Jaguars would answer back with two longballs in the fourth to regain the lead at 12-11. Allen Westmoreland (SR/Pearland, TX) belted a solo home run and Almendarez tacked on a two-run shot.
But the Mustangs would add two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fifth for a 15-12 advantage.
The Jaguars continued to nibble back with solo runs in the seventh and eighth before tying the game with another solo run in the ninth.
Gross got the ninth going with a one-out double down the left field line. With Andrew Richards (FR/Sugar Land, TX) pinch running, Dalton Rodriguez singled to center to score Richards with the tying run.
The two teams wrap up the three-game conference series on Saturday with a noon single game.
