[Baseball] Jaguars open with split against UTB

BROWNSVILLE – For the third straight year the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars baseball team has opened the season with a doubleheader split.

After being shutout in a season-opener for the first time in five years, the Jaguars bounced back behind the longball to avoid the sweep against the UT-Brownsville Scorpions.

Despite having their tournament plans rained out this weekend in Galveston, the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars softball team will still have a chance to open the 2012 spring season as planned.

The Jaguars will take part in the Temple College Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Temple.

The University of Houston-Victoria softball team was to open its Spring 2012 season this weekend at the Galveston College Invitational, but wet weather conditions have forced the cancellation of the tournament.

The Jaguars, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA preseason poll, was to open play on Friday against San Jacinto but heavy rains in the Galveston area forced the tournament to be cancelled.

The University of Houston-Victoria softball team will open its Spring 2012 season on Feb. 3-4 in the Galveston College Invitational.

The Jaguars, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA preseason poll, open play on Friday against San Jacinto College at 8 a.m. The Jaguars then face McLennan College at 10 a.m. and finish the day with a 2 p.m. matchup with Temple College.

The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars baseball team with just six returning starters will open the 2012 season with a big test on Feb. 3-4 in Brownsville.

The Jaguars will meet the UT-Brownsville Scorpions in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and wrap up the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Twenty-six University of Houston-Victoria athletes have been named to the UHV Fall 2011 Dean's List.

To qualify for the Dean's List,, undergraduates must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average. A minimum of nine semester hours, excluding courses in which grades of "Satisfactory" were earned, is required. Any student who earns a grade of "Unsatisfactory," "Incomplete," D or F during the semester is excluded from consideration.

The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars soccer team will hold open tryouts on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the UHV soccer field located on the UHV campus at 3007 N. Ben Wilson.

The women's tryouts will be from11 a.m.to 2 p.m. and the men's tryouts will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes early to sign and fill out paperwork.

Adrian Mendoza looked like a seasoned collegiate veteran from the first time he stepped onto the field in August for the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars.

The freshman from Katy was nearly unstoppable for the Jaguars this season where he shattered nearly ever scoring record in UHV's short two-year soccer history.

The Jaguars athletic web site went through an extensive redesign at the end of 2011 and the new web site hit the world-wide web at the start of 2012.

[Softball] Sax signs to play softball for Jaguars

Houston Memorial senior Casey Sax will be joining the University of Houston-Victoria softball program after signing a letter of intent earlier this month.

Sax, who is a three-year letter winner for the Mustangs plays the infield and also serves as team captain for her team. She earned District 18-5A second team honors last season and was named the District 18-5A Newcomer of the Year in 2009.

[Men's Soccer] Jaguars soccer team raises funds for prostate cancer awareness

During the month of November the University of Houston-Victoria men's soccer team has been participating in Movember to help bring awareness to men's health issues by supporting prostate cancer and other male cancer initiatives.

For the past month the 36 team members and support staff have been growing mustaches and raising funds through the Movember campaign, As the month comes to a close the team has raised over $3,100 through their efforts.

[Men's Soccer] Mendoza, Kenyon named first team all-conference

After rewriting the University of Houston-Victoria men's soccer record book during the 2011 season, freshmen Adrian Mendoza and Nathan Kenyon have drawn due recognition.

Mendoza and Kenyon were among the 15 players selected this week to the Association of Independent Institutions All-Conference men's soccer first team. Teammate Rudy Castrejon was named to the second team.
