[Softball] Bergstrom, Arredondo receive All-Southwest Region honors

University of Houston-Victoria senior Emily Bergstrom and junior Brittany Arredondo have been named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Southwest Region first team.

Both players were named to the team at at-large positions as Bergstrom (El Campo) pitches for the Jaguars, while Arredondo (Canyon Lake) plays shortstop.

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars found their bats Thursday, but unfortunately couldn't string enough hits together to turn back the Central Methodist Eagles in the opening round of pool play at the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championships.

The Jaguars (39-9) out hit the Eagles (41-12) 7-4, but CMU used back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to pull out a 2-0 victory over the Jaguars in a Pool F contest. In the other Pool F game, William Carey blanked Indiana Wesleyan 7-0. The Jaguars face Indiana Wesleyan on Friday at 5 p.m.

[Men's Soccer] Brenham senior picks UHV to continue soccer career

Brenham senior goalkeeper Brady Hill has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the University of Houston-Victoria men's soccer team.

Hill helped guide the Cubs to the District 40-4A title and a berth in the Region III quarterfinals this past season. The Cubs fell 2-1 to Waco Midway in the quarterfinals where he had 10 saves and allowed both goals.

As the University of Houston-Victoria softball team goes through final preparations for the NAIA National Championships the team knows how important it will be to continue its focus that it has had all season long.

The Jaguars went into the season as a team and knew how important it would be at taking it one game at a time in order to obtain their goal of obtaining a spot in the national tournament.

Three members of the University of Houston-Victoria baseball team earned recognition on the 2012 Association of Independent Institutions all-conference baseball team released today.

Junior shortstop Chad Kruse and senior designated hitter were selected to the first team while sophomore Ryan Suescun was named to the second team.

Corpus Christi senior Morgan DeSive was named the University of Houston-Victoria women's golf player of the year Thursday night during the annual UHV awards banquet.

University of Houston-Victoria senior Emily Bergstrom and freshman Adrian Mendoza were named the 2012 UHV Athletes of the Year on Thursday during the annual UHV Jaguars athlete awards banquet held at Schroeder Hall.

It was the second straight year for Bergstrom, a left-handed pitcher from El Campo, to receive the award.

University of Houston-Victoria senior golfer Jonathan Allen has qualified for the 103rd Texas State Amateur to be played June 14-17 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas.

Allen qualified a day after returning home from the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Tournament.

The University of Houston-Victoria softball team will have three 40-game winners in their pool when they open play in the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championships on May 17 in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Jaguars (39-8) will be joined in Pool F by William Carey (47-9), Central Methodist (40-12) and Indiana Wesleyan (44-11). The Jaguars are the No. 2 seed in their pool.

The University of Houston-Victoria softball team earned its second trip to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Softball National Championships set for May 17-23 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Jaguars (39-8) earned one of the eight at-large berths and will be making their first appearance at the tournament since 2009.
