Senior pitcher Ray Maldonado of Cuero and outfielder Zane Williams, who hails from Devil's Pocket, Texas, were honored as Second Team All-Americans.
Maldonado, a right-hander, went 10-0 in 2009 with an earned run average of 2.43 in 14 starts. His win total tied him for third best in the NAIA. Maldonado stuck out 96 batters and walked only 32 in 78.1 innings. His 14 strikeouts in a win over Bacone on Feb. 7 set a new school record. In his two-year career at UHV, Maldonado went 19-2 with an ERA of 2.53. He pitched 142 innings, striking out 180 batters and walking 45.
Williams' only season at UHV was impressive. He set several single-season school records, including home runs (17), RBIs (78) and slugging percentage (.799). Williams, a transfer from Southern Arkansas University, also batted .374 and was named NAIA Athlete of the Week for the week of March 16.
The Jaguars are coached by former Houston Astros outfielder Terry Puhl and qualified for the opening round of the 2009 NAIA Baseball National Championships in the second year of UHV's athletics program.
The All-America Teams consist of 17 members on the First Team, 17 on the Second Team and an Honorable Mention Team, which is limited to 34 players. The HM Team is not position-specific.
The 2009 NAIA Coach of the Year will be announced in early January at the ABCA Coaches Convention.
