Decatur, Ala.- For the second straight year, the UHV softball season has ended at the hands of St. Gregory's University. And for the second straight year the Jags were on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss.
Sharon Bell (26-8), tossed a one hitter and struck out 15 to lead the Cavaliers to the Pool G title and a trip to the final eight.
Rotramel, held her own against the NAIA's all time strike out leader, giving up only 5 hits, and no earned runs. Rotramel also struck out 5.
The Jags had a couple of chances to get to Bell early but couldn't cash in. In the second, with one out, Bell issued consecutive walks to Cirby Ryan and Lindsey Ferguson. Ryan then stole third. Brittany Faas struck out for the second out. Ryan was then called out for leaving third early during a squeeze attempt and the inning was over.
The Cavaliers plated their only run in the fourth when Courtney Reynaga reached on a one out single, was sacrificed to second, and then scored on a ground ball that shortstop Stephanie Lavey could not field cleanly.
The Jags put some pressure on Bell in the top of the seventh. Cirby Ryan drew a two out walk, but Bell struck out Lindsey Ferguson to end the game and advance to the championship bracket.
The Jags finish the season with a record of 35-12 and will return only 5 players from this year's team in 2010.
Last year, the Cavaliers ended the Jags sesaon with a 1-0 victory at the NAIA Region 6 tournament in Farmer's Branch, Texas.
