The University of Houston Victoria Jaguars won 3 of 4 games to open the 2009 season.
On Friday, the Jaguars opened the season sweeping a double header from the Northwood University Knights, winning the opening game 4-2. Senior righthander Ray Maldonado got the win, the 10th of his career. In game 2, Bobby Gomez picked up the win in his Jagaurs debut as the Jags took the night cap 7-4.
The Knights exacted some revenge on Saturday, winning the game 17-5. Centerfielder R.J. Harris hit 2 home runs and drove in 5 RBIs.
This afternoon, over 400 faithful turned out on warm, blustery day to watch the Jaguars beat Southwestern University (NCAA Division 3) 9-7. Austin Hitt pitched 5 strong innings, and was helped by Tony Rothman's 3 run homer, to get the win. Mike Arevealo pitched an inning and a third to pick up his 3rd save in as many chances. Arevealo allowed the tying run on base but got Cray Betts to lift a fly ball out to centerfielder James Green to end the game.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Wednesday night in Corpus Christi. The Jags will take on Texas A and M, Kingsville at Whataburger Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
