The UHV Jaguars dropped their first game at the opening round of the NAIA Baseball National Championships in Lubbock, losing to William Jewell College 9-5.
The Jags held a 4-3 lead going into the eighth inning but the bullpen could not hold the lead.
William Jewell scored 4 times in the top of the eighth off reliever Colter Zoch to take a 7-4 lead and eventually hand the loss to Zoch, who falls to 2-3 on the season.
The Cardinals then added two in the ninth off pitcher Mike Arevealo.
John West drove in a run in the bottom of the ninth to close the margin to four, but the Jags would not get any closer. Josh Bromberg grounded out to second to end the game. Cardinals starter Steve Johnson earned the win (5-3) giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs. Jacob Kraft pitched the final inning and a third for the Cardinals. Kraft and Johnson combined to strike out 14 Jaguars' batters during the game.
The loss drops the Jaguars to the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament, meaning the Jaguars will have to win out to advance the NAIA World Series, which will be held in Lewiston, Idaho May 22-29. Only the winners of the nine opening round tournaments advance to the NAIA World Series.
The Jags' next game will be tomorrow morning at 10 against the loser of today's 2:00 p.m. game featuring Northwood University and Wayland Baptist.
William Jewell advances to play #1 seed Lubbock Christian University tonight at 6:00 p.m.
