BROWNSVILLE – Juan Solis sparked the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars with five RBI and a three-run home run in Game 1 of a Saturday doubleheader, before the UT-Brownsville Scorpions and the weather got the best of the Jaguars in Game 2.
Solis' three-run blast highlighted a five-run third inning as the Jaguars held off a late UTB rally for a 9-8 win in Game 1. But the Scorpions retaliated in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the first two innings and then got help from Mother Nature when heavy rain and lightning forced the end to Game 2 in the bottom of the seventh giving UTB a 6-2 win.
The two teams split the four-game weekend series 2-2.
The Jaguars (2-2) picked up right where they left off on Friday as they tallied twice behind an RBI single from John Longoria and a sacrifice fly by Solis.
After the Scorpions picked up an unearned run in the second to cut the lead to 2-1, the Jaguars looked to blow the game open in the third.
Ryan Suescun reached on a fielder's choice and Longoria followed with a double. Suescun raced home on a ground by Tyler Steiner that was misplayed by the UTB shortstop. Chad Kruse then ripped a single to center scoring Longoria, before Solis hit his first carrier home run, a three-run shot.
Solis would added to the RBI total with another sacrifice fly in the fifth, while Josh Ledesma deliver and infield single that scored another run for a 9-1 advantage.
The Scorpions made a run at the Jaguars in the sixth sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven unearned runs, only to come up short in the end.
Nick Huff came on to get the Jaguars out of further trouble and pitched the seventh to collect his second straight save of the season. Tanner Hamilton picked up the win going 5.2 and allowing all eight unearned runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out four.
Kyle Douglass sparked the Scorpions in Game 2 opening the first with a two-run home run, while Scott Frazier added a two-run single in the second.
UTB would add solo tallies in the third and fourth, before the Jaguars would break up the shutout in the fifth.
Cory Hulsey doubled and Longoria added a two-out single to score Hulsey.
The Jaguars added an unearned run in the seventh on a pair of UTB errors and an RBI single from Suescun.
The Jaguars return to action Tuesday in Alvin with an exhibition doubleheader against Alvin College at 1 p.m.
