PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Shelbi Vincent (SR/Nederland, TX) and Viviana Yzquierdo (FR/Barbers Hills, TX) each posted opening round 83s Friday to help lead the University of Houston Victoria women's golf team to a eighth-place finish after the first round of the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship at the PGA Golf Club.
Defending champion Bethune-Cookman University holds the first-round lead with a 295, six shots ahead of the University of the Incarnate Word. UIW is in at 301. The Jaguars posted an opening round 366 and are eight shots back of seventh-place Delaware State (358) and 22 shots ahead of Lincoln University (388).
Vincent and Yzquierdo are currently tied for 23rd in the 43-player field after their opening round 83s on the par-72 Ryder Course. Reid Whaley (SO/Nederland, TX) added a 97 and Jo Ellen Canales (SO/Corpus Christi, TX) a 103 to round out the UHV scoring.
Bethune-Cookman's Mackenzie Butzer holds the first-round individual lead with a 3-under par 69, while UIW's Madison Frerking and North Carolina A&T's Jocelyn Andrews are tied for second at 1-over par 73.
The Jaguars will tee of Saturday for the second round beginning at 10:15 a.m. and will be paired with Delaware State and Lincoln University.
