After the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars claimed a 4-0 win over the Arlington Baptist Patriots in the opening game Saturday, the Jaguars had to do like the Patriots did Friday night as they rallied late for a 9-8 victory to complete the sweep at Riverside Stadium.
The Jaguars bounced back from a 6-5 loss on Friday to improve their record to 2-1 with Saturday's doubleheader sweep.
The Jaguars used a three-run first inning in the opening game to even the series and then scored nine runs in the final three innings of the nightcap to secure the sweep with a bases-load single up the middle in a drawn in infield.
Trailing 8-6 going into the bottom of the ninth, Allen Westmoreland (SR/Pearland, TX) opened the rally with a single to deep short. Andrew Gross (SR/Alvin, TX) then single to center with Westmoreland racing to third. Chase Tamez (SO/Cypress, TX) walked to load the bases and Jacob Mihalski (JR/League City, TX) tied the game with a two-run single down the right field line.
After pinch-hitter Jonathan Banuloes was intentionally walked to load the bases, up stepped Derek Maciejeski (FR/Tomball, TX), who was 8-for-10 in the series when he came to the plate, and he slapped single back through the middle scoring Tamez with the game-winning run.
The Patriots (1-2) took a 7-0 lead with a five-run seventh, but the Jaguars finally broke through with their own five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh.
The big blast came from Gross who crushed a three-run home run off the light pole in left-center. It was Gross' second home run of the series.
The Patriots shot back with an unearned run in the top of the eighth off reliever Marco Ynclan (FR/Gonzales, TX), before Gross, the Jaguars fifth pitcher, came on and shut the Patriots down with 1.1 scoreless innings.
The Jaguars got the eighth-inning run back in the bottom of the inning as Chase Almendarez (JR/Round Rock, TX) drove Maciejeski home.
The Jaguars got six strong innings of relief from Bo Sheridan (SR/Sugar Land, TX) in the opener to make the three first-inning runs stand up.
The Jaguars will not return to action until Tuesday, Feb. 21 when they host St. Edward's University in a 5 p.m. contest at Riverside Stadium.
