HOUSTON – For the second straight year, the University of Houston-Victoria men's soccer team saw their season come to an end in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at the Houston Sports Park.
The defending champion Wiley Wildcats used an early second half goal to turn back the Jaguars for the second time this season with a 1-0 victory Thursday, The Wildcats (9-4-1) will now defend their title against LSU-Alexandria, a 1-0 winner over Our Lady of the Lake, in Friday's 7:30 p.m. final. UHV ends the year at 10-7-1.
Abdallah Rayyan scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute to give the Wildcats the victory.
Wiley outshot the Jaguars 20-19, but both teams were even at 9-9 in shots on goal. Wiley held a 10-8 shot advantage at the half along with a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
Gerardo Arriaga (JR/Houston, TX) paced the Jaguars with five shots, while Espen Hansen (SO/Kristiansand, Norway) fired of four shots, including two on goal. Reece Hannigan (JR/Sutton Surrey, England), Taylor Gordon (SR/Falkirk, Scotland), Kyle Davison-Gordon (SO/Leighton Buzzard, England) and Stanley Smith (SR/Arlington, Tx) each fired off two shots for the Jaguars.
Brian Redmond (SR/Tullamore, Ireland) was in goal for the Jaguars and finished with seven saves.
