Senior Connor McGillivray (SR/Inverness, Scotland) scored his first UHV career goal and senior goalkeeper Brian Redmond (SR/Tullamore, Ireland) continued his clean sheet streak Sunday as the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars rolled past the McMurry Warhawks 3-0 on Senior Day at the Cage.
The Jaguars improved to 8-5-1 with the win, while the Warhawks fell to 3-9-2.
McGillivray's goal came on a penalty kick in the 19th minute after teammate and fellow senior Stanley Smith (SR/Arlington, Tx) was pulled down inside the box on a breakaway. McGillivray lined up the shot and fired it past the McMurry goalkeeper into the left corner of the net to set off a celebration of sorts with his fellow seniors.
The Jaguars would convert on a set piece in the 28th minute as Brian Foulger (JR/Leighton Buzzard, England) took a free kick from senior Marcus Watt (SR/Montrose, Scotland) and sent it into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Reece Hannigan (JR/Sutton Surrey, England) would then strike for the final goal of the game with 45 seconds to play in the first half when he fired in a shot from around 30 yards out.
The Jaguars outshot the Warhawks 14-11, but were edged 8-7 in shots on goal. Oladipo Akintunde (FR/Sugar Land, TX) paced the Jaguars with three shots, while Brody Patience (FR/Douglas, Isle of Man) tacked on two more.
Meanwhile, Redmond turned away all eight shots he faced on goal for his fourth straight shutout and sixth of the season.
Along with McGillivray, Redmond, Smith and Watt, seniors Taylor Gordon (SR/Falkirk, Scotland), Juan Vega (SR/Houston, Tx), Ben Taylor (SR/Nottingham, England), Jack Pluckwell (SR/Bury St. Edmunds, England), Nelson Castro (SR/Houston, Tx), and Samuel James (SR/Worcester, England) were recognized during halftime of the game.
The Jaguars return to action Thursday in Austin when they face off with Huston-Tillotson in a Red river Athletic Conference match at 3:30 p.m.
