SAN ANTONIO - The St. Mary's Rattlers scored three first half goals Thursday to hand the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars a 3-1 setback in their inaugural men's soccer match.
Danny Kelly put home the Rattlers' (1-0) first goal in the 28th minute on an indirect kick from 50 yards after a dead ball foul.
Sean Strater would add another unassisted goal in the 40th minute and Anthony Bustos would finish off the Rattlers' scoring in the 42nd minute off an assist by David Anthony Oliver.
The Jaguars (0-1) avoided the shutout on an unassisted goal from Zuzeko Ghongkedze in the 68th minute.
"We're still learning what we can do with our team," Jaguars head coach Adrian Rigby said. "The guys battled hard and we just came out on the short end this time."
St. Mary's outshot the Jaguars 18-11 and had 11 shots on goal compared to the Jaguars' eight.
Rommel Morales was in goal in the first half for the Jaguars and made five saves, while Seth Prochaska was in goal the second half and had three saves.
The Jaguars jump right back into action on Friday when they host Concordia University-Austin at the St. Joseph-O'Conner Athletic Complex. The UHV women begin the action at 3 p.m., with the men to follow at 5 p.m.
