BROWNSVILLE - The University of Houston-Victoria women's soccer team fought off shot after shot on Sunday, but two late goals were all the University of Texas-Brownsville Scorpions needed to record a 2-0 victory over the Jaguars.

UHV goalkeeper Sarah Saldivar (Houston) was on her toes the entire game as the Scorpions fired off 30 shots including 12 on goal. Saldivar came up with 10 saves, but UTB's Verena Wonsikowski was able to convert twice to lift the Scorpions (1-0-1) to the victory.

Wonsikowski tallied her first goal in the 74th minute and then iced the game in the 84th minute off an assist from Chelsea Maidment.

The Scorpions outshot the Jaguars 14-1 in the first half, but the two teams ended the first 45 minutes tied 0-0. UTB continued the assault in the second half outshooting the Jaguars 16-2 as Saldivar came up with seven of her 10 saves in the half.

Marissa Cervantez (Temple) was wide on two shots for the Jaguars (0-2), while Christina Montelongo (Victoria)had an opportunity to cut the lead back to one shortly after Wonsikowski's second goal, but her shot sailed wide.

The Jaguars return home to host Cedar Valley College in their home opener on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph-O'Conner Athletic Complex.
