Former Cuero Gobbler Austin Griffin has become the first member of the University of Houston-Victoria's inaugural men's golf program.
Griffin, who helped guide the Gobblers to four consecutive UIL Class 3A state tournament appearances, has committed to play golf for head coach Brian Williamson and the Jaguars.
"He has a lot of talent, is a natural leader and has the desire to win," Williamson said. "He's a good student and I think he can help us win on the long and difficult courses."
Griffin helped the Gobblers to state appearances in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 and then went on to play at Schreiner University in Kerrville, before taking a couple of years away from the game.
"It's great to be back into playing tournament golf again and I'm looking forward to being a member of the Jaguars team," Griffin said.
During the four-year run to state, Griffin and the Gobblers collected one Region IV-3A title, three regional runner-up finishes and four district titles.
Griffin had a 76.8 scoring average in his four state appearances and finished tied for fourth his sophomore year with a 77-73-150. During his junior and senior years, Griffin posted identical rounds of 77-78-155 to finish tied for 12th and 20th respectively.
The Gobblers finished fourth as a team in 2004 and 2005, tied for sixth in 2006 and placed fifth in 2007.
Griffin said he is looking forward to getting back into competitive golf at UHV.
"I'm really looking forward to getting back to playing again because it's been a while," Griffin said. "I've heard we've got some good recruits coming in, so hopefully we can compete for a national championship."
Griffin was also a four-time district champion and won a regional title while also being named a National High School Golf Coaches Association All-American in 2006.
Williamson feels Griffin's full potential has yet to be developed.
"He's already a good player, however, I feel his best golf is still ahead of him," Williamson said. "We intend to work very hard in order for him to reach the next level."
