FRESNO, Calif. - Rashad Taylor drove in three runs and the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions banged out 14 hits Wednesday to hand the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars a 10-7 loss in the NAIA Baseball Championships opening round tournament at Fresno Pacific's FPU Diamond.
The Sea Lions (37-18-1), last year's NAIA championship runner-up, advances to Thursday's 9 p.m. championship game, while the Jaguars (33-21) will face British Columbia in an elimination game on Thursday at 5 p.m., with the winner to meet the Sea Lions in the championship. UBC eliminated Fresno Pacific 6-3 late Wednesday.
Fresno Pacific eliminated Ohio Dominican 15-1 in an earlier game Wednesday in a game called after seven innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Jaguars tried to rally one last time in the ninth after the Sea Lions blew open a 6-4 contest with a four-run eighth to grab a 10-4 lead.
Austin Kent opened the ninth with a solo home run to left center and Ryan Gilbert followed with a walk to chase started Brandon Dixon. Jose Quintanilla then delivered a one-out RBI single to cut the lead to 10-6. The Jaguars tallied one last run on Josh Bromberg's fielder's choice grounder the ended the game when David Baker was thrown out at third with LeSean Thomas scoring.
Point Loma blew a close game open in the top of the eighth when they tagged three UHV pitchers for four runs and a 10-4 lead. Tyler Kuehl and Wes Kartch each doubled home runs, while Taylor and Steven Winnick had RBI singles.
Kuehl's and Taylor's RBI hits came against Daniel Lopez, who tossed 5.1 innings of relief. Kartch met reliever Darrel Stevens with a double and Winnick followed with a single. Casey Newman came on to relieve Stevens and got the lone man he faced to line into a double play to first baseman Josh Bromberg.
Point Loma wasted little time getting on the board against starter Bobby Gomez as Allen Boyer led off with a triple and scored on an infield single by Alex Cameron.
The Sea Lions would added three more in the second on an RBI single from Kuehl and a two-run double by Taylor.
The Jaguars broke through against Dixon (10-0) as Jerrod Dugas opened the third with a double and scored on John Longoria's ground out to first.
Alec Martinez put the Sea Lions up 6-1 with a two-run single, before the Jaguars again countered scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth.
Joey Briones was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Kent, Gilbert and Longoria followed with three straight doubles to cut the lead to 6-3. Gilbert would then score on a sacrifice fly by Quintanilla.
