The six-team double elimination tournament will feature four games the first two days, with championship day set for the final day.
Here are previews of the six teams that will compete in the tournament:
Cal State University -San Marcos
The Cougars bring a 35-13 record into the tournament and are ranked No. 7 in the nation in the NAIA Top 25 poll and are the No. 1 seed for the tournament. …Coach Dave Williams is in his first year as coach at the San Marcos, CA., school. …The Cougars are led in the circle by junior pitcher Brenna Sandberg, who has a 33-10 record with a 1.30 ERA. Sandberg has pitched 280.1 innings allowing 81 runs on 191 hits with 54 walks and 263 strikeouts. She has all but five of the Cougars' decisions this year. …At the plate, sophomore Alyssa Dronenburg leads the team with a .440 average, 16 home runs, 48 RBI, 41 runs and 119 total bases. Sophomore Ciera Ashman follows with a .354 average and leads the team with 14 doubles.
The Cougars enter the tournament on a three-game win streak, which includes a 7-4 win over top-ranked Cal Baptist University. …The team's longest winning streak this season has been 10 games, while the longest losing streak was three.
As the tournament's No. 1 seed the Cougars receive a first-round bye and will play the Ohio Dominican-University of British Columbia winner at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 6.
Simon Fraser University
The 11th-ranked Clan bring a 17-12 record into the tournament and are the No. 2 seed. The team is coached by Mike Renney, who is in his 16th season with a 464-160 record. Simon Fraser is located in Burnaby, B.C. and qualified for the NAIA Championships last year. The Clan relies on four pitchers and include senior Jennifer Van Egdom (7-4, 2.49 ERA), junior Myriam Poirier (5-4, 2.24 ERA), and freshmen Cara Lukawesky (3-1, 2.02 ERA) and Ashley Hadland (2-3, 1.99 ERA). …Sophomore Kelsey Haberl leads the team at the plate with a .400 average and has 21 RBI, 19 runs, seven doubles and four home runs. Sophomore Leah Riske leads the team with 31 RBI and six home runs, while compiling a .345 average.
The Clan enter the tournament having lost three of its last five. …The team's longest win streak this season has been six games, while the longest losing streak has been three games.
As the No. 2 seed the Clan also draws a first round bye and will face the UHV-LSU-Alexandria winner at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6.
University of Houston-Victoria
The 21st-ranked Jaguars bring a 33-15 record into the tournament as they try to defend their championship from the third-seed position. …The team is coached by Keri Lambeth, who notched her 100th and the school's 100th win, in the Jaguars regular-season finale, a 14-1 win over Texas College. Lambeth is 100-45 in her three seasons at UHV. …Senior Tasha Rotramel leads the pitching staff with two no-hitters this season. Rotramel is 15-10 with a 1.68 ERA and has 140 strikeouts in 158 innings. Sophomore Baylea Wagner will bring a 12-2 record and a 2.43 ERA into the tournament, while sophomore Emily Bergstrom is 6-3 with a 2.68 ERA. …At the plate, junior Courtney Pettit is batting .383 with 36 RBI, 30 runs and 18 doubles. Junior Allison Hinton has a .364 batting average and leads the team with 40 RBI and nine home runs to go with her 37 runs and 10 doubles. Senior Izzy Glowney leads the team with 45 runs as she has compiled a .349 average with 29 RBI, 11 doubles and four home runs.
The Jaguars bring a two game win streak into the tournament and have won seven of their last 10 games. …The team has twice won seven games in a row, while their longest losing streak has been three games.
The No. 3 Jaguars will go up against No. 6 LSU-Alexander in the opening round at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, with the winner to meet Simon Fraser later in the day.
Ohio Dominican
The fourth-seeded Panthers bring a 28-23 record into the conference tournament. …The team is coached by Marcella Vanlandingham, who is in her 15th season with the Panthers and holds a 475-330 record at the Columbus, Ohio, school. …Junior Maria Staton and sophomore Erica Sutter has controlled the circle for the Panthers combing for a 26-19 record this season. Staton is 16-8 with a 2.00 ERA and Sutter is 10-11 with a 3.43 ERA. Sutter is also hitting .400 with 36 runs. …At the plate, junior Jennifer Baker has a .359 average with a team leading 45 runs, while junior Samantha Wolfe has a .297 average with a team-leading 45 RBI and 12 doubles. Sophomores Kylee Crislip and Chelsea Archer have provided the power for the Panthers leading the way with five home runs each.
The Panthers have won seven of their last 10 games, with their longest win streak being six games and their longest losing streak three.
The Panthers open the tournament by facing No. 5-seed University of British Columbia in an 11 a.m. contest on Thursday, May 6.
University of British Columbia
The fifth-seed Thunderbirds from Vancouver, B.C., bring a 9-15 record into the conference tournament. …Coach Phil Thom is in his first season with the Thunderbirds. …Freshman Nicole Day leads the team in the circle with a 4-6 record and 4.93 ERA. …At the plate, freshman Lindsay McElroy leads the way with a .420 batting average and a .594 slugging average. She has two home runs and 19 RBI. …The Thunderbirds squad includes 11 freshmen, one sophomore and five juniors.
The Thunderbirds have won six of their last 10 games with their longest win streak being five games that also snapped a six-game losing streak.
The Thunderbirds face Ohio Dominican in the first round at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, with the winner drawing top-seed Cal State-San Marcos in a 4 p.m. contest.
LSU-Alexandria
The Generals come into the tournament with an 11-32 record and are the sixth seed. McKewn Dannelly coaches the Alexandria, La., school. …Senior Megan Rowe has been the go-to in the circle for the Generals this season. Rowe has a 3-14 record with a 3.87 ERA in 91.1 innings. …Sophomore Jessica Pocorello has been the big gun at the plate with a .369 average, 31 RBI, 26 runs and 12 doubles. Amanda Savoie follows with a .316 average, 20 RBI, 37 runs and 10 doubles.
The Generals are on a six-game losing streak and have lost nine of their last 11 games coming into the tournament. The teams longest win streak has been four games and the longest losing streak is nine.
The Generals go up against No. 3 UHV in the opening round at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6.
Action on Friday, May 7 resumes at 11 a.m. with games to follow at 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The final loser's bracket game is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday with the championship game set for 1:30 p.m.
All tournament games will be played at Burdge Field, located in the St. Joseph High School- O'Connor Athletic Complex, 3006 North Cameron Street.
The tournament winner and runner-up will automatically advance to the NAIA softball national championship in Decatur, Ala., May 20-26.
